Mezuzah case will go to court

“On Friday, a federal court in Chicago ruled that a trial should be held in a case involving a Jewish family who sued, alleging religious discrimination, after a condo association removed its mezuzah from an apartment door frame on North Sheridan Road. (skip) The ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit resulted from a rare en banc rehearing on the Blochs’ case, with eight judges participating. Last year, a three-judge appeals-court panel had rejected the appeal.Friday’s decision was a vindication not just for the Blochs but for Judge Diane Wood, a member of the appeals court — who was on President Barack Obama’s  shortlist for a Supreme Court seat last spring. When the three-judge panel first heard the appeal, Wood was in the minority in accepting Bloch’s argument that her case had been wrongly thrown out by a trial judge.
