“Rubashkin”:As many as 700 arrested in Iowa illegal immigration raid

POSTVILLE, Iowa — A raid by federal immigration officials at the nation’s largest kosher meatpacking plant may have resulted in as many as 700 arrests, immigration officials said Monday.
Agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement entered the Agriprocessors Inc. complex in northeast Iowa Monday morning to execute a criminal search warrant for evidence relating to aggravated identity theft, fraudulent use of Social Security numbers and other crimes, said Tim Counts, a Midwest ICE spokesman.
Agents are also executing a civil search warrant for people illegally in the United States, he said.
Immigration officials told aides to Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Iowa, that they expect 600 to 700 arrests. About 1,000 to 1,050 people work at the plant, according to Iowa Workforce Development, the state’s employment services agency.
Chuck Larson, a truck driver for Agriprocessing, was in the plant when the agents arrived. “There has to be 100 of them,” he said of the agents.

On the evening of April 14, a 20-year-old black man named Andrew Charles was attacked with pepper spray and then beaten by a pair of Hasidic assailants in his Crown Heights neighborhood. The attackers escaped in a GMC Envoy, and although Charles didn’t catch the plate number, a witness did. Police traced its registration to another neighborhood resident, Menachem Ezagui, who police say is a member of a local volunteer security-patrol group called the Crown Heights Shmira. He was picked up by police, but when the victim couldn’t identify him in a lineup, he was released. The investigation remains open, and the Shmira isn’t helping. NYmag.com

In statements released ahead of and on Independence Day, President Shimon Peres continues to defend the chareidi population, rejecting the generally acceptable practice of belittling, ridiculing and adversely commenting on the chareidi way of life.
Peres spoke of the three major sectors of poverty in Israel, the chareidim, Arabs and youth. He explained that regarding the chareidi sector, accommodations must be made to permit them to enter the work place on their terms. If woman cannot work in certain environment due to modesty issues, “then bring the computers to her home,? stated the president.
“One mustn´t ridicule a Jew who wears his tzitzis outside his garment. What is the joke? What is there to ridicule. If he must daven, then permit him to daven. So what!”
“Before we begin giving mussar to the chareidim we should evaluate ourselves… First of all, we must change our attitudes towards the chareidi community… Democracy is the right to be different.?
When asked how he would like to see the country in another 60 years, the president responded, “We should be old like the Ten Commandments and modern like nanotechnology.?

The Federal Reserve and two other banking regulators are set to unveil today one of the most aggressive efforts in decades to crack down on the credit card industry, prohibiting practices such as arbitrarily raising interest rates on outstanding balances.The proposed regulations, which could be finalized by year’s end, would label as “unfair or deceptive” practices that consumers have long complained about. That includes charging interest on debt that has been repaid and assessing late fees when consumers are not given a reasonable amount of time to make a payment.
