The former leader of a controversial meatpacking plant has been arrested again, this time on a federal bank-fraud charge. Sholom Rubashkin, 49, who ran the Agriprocessors, Inc. plant for years, was arrested in Postville this morning, said Bob Teig, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office. Rubashkin was scheduled to appear in court in Cedar Rapids at 11 a.m. today. Rubashkin had been free on bond after being arrested late last month on federal charges of conspiring to hire undocumented workers at the Postville meat processing plant. He also faces state charges of illegally employing underage workers at the plant. The company, which had been the nation’s largest supplier of kosher meat, filed for bankruptcy earlier this month. That action came shortly after a lawsuit filed by First Bank, which said Agriprocessors defaulted on a $35 million loan and overstated how much money it had @DesmoinesRegister.com

Shalom, a righteous individual, who as a young child was generous and giving. He was my classmate in grade school and all my memories of him lead to a selfless kid who was always giving to others. He used to treat us to a nosh at the family delicatessan and greeted all the unfortunate souls who frequented there for a free meal, as was the family’s custom with a nice hello. He was just a sweetheart guy! I’m sure he hasn’t changed! No selfish bone in his body! He really got a bum-rap in this whole thing. Yes he may have done some wrong, violated some ordinances, but look at the whole individual! They were out to get him and they did! It’s a shame that our government doesn’t look at the whole picture when arresting and incarcerating individuals. There’s so much bad - go after the good guys! Shame
