Kiryas Joel: A Community Gets Younger, and Bigger, With Age

“About 20 years ago, the family of Baila Moskowitz had an idea. And what an idea.
In the fledgling Hasidic community of Kiryas Joel, they founded ABC Toys. Now it overflows with everything a child could want — Torah tapes and CDs, tiny figurines of Hasidic families, Hanukkah coloring books, pencils and rulers, and Hebrew memorization games, along with Fisher-Price plastic toys, miniature cars and trucks and plump dolls a lot more chaste-looking than Barbie. “No toys advertised on TV,” Ms. Moskowitz said. “Our kids don’t watch TV. And no ‘Star Wars’ and all those monsters and the rest. Nothing violent, no war toys. We sell now what we sold when we opened. People want quality. They have a lot of kids.” NYTimes.com
